{"id":21,"date":"2022-04-17T12:54:43","date_gmt":"2022-04-17T16:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www-pmhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/ib\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2024-05-10T09:24:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T13:24:38","slug":"courses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www-pmhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/ib\/home\/courses\/","title":{"rendered":"PMHS IB Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A closer look into IB at PMHS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www-pmhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/ib\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/09\/IB-4-Year-Plan.pdf\">Please click here to see our current IB 4 Year Plan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The IB curriculum is made up of six subject groups, in addition to the DP Core, which consists of three required components, the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).<\/p>\n<p>The three required components of the DP core aims to broaden students\u2019 educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n<p>The three core elements are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/theory-of-knowledge\/\"><strong>Theory of knowledge<\/strong><\/a>, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/extended-essay\/\"><strong>The extended essay<\/strong><\/a>, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The six subject groups are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/language-and-literature\/\">Studies in language and literature<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/language-acquisition\/\">Language acquisition<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/individuals-and-societies\/\">Individuals and societies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/sciences\/\">Sciences<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/mathematics\/\">Mathematics<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/diploma-programme\/curriculum\/the-arts\/\">The arts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are different courses within each subject group offered at PMHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Students choose courses from the following subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Students may opt to study an additional sciences, individuals and societies, or languages course, instead of a course in the arts.<\/p>\n<p>Students will take some subjects at higher level (HL) and some at standard level (SL).\u00a0 HL and SL courses differ in scope but are measured according to the same grade descriptors, with students expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level.<\/p>\n<p>Each student takes at least three (but not more than four) subjects at higher level, and the remaining at standard level.<\/p>\n<p>Standard level subjects take up 150 teaching hours. Higher level comprises 240 teaching hours.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the subject briefs below for an overview of each course including the requirements (Internal Assessment and External Assessment) and
