We want excellence to be evident in every aspect of school life, and we want the student to be proud of the excellence. Every rule, every regulation, and every effort exists in order to help the students become strong, self-reliant, considerate adults. With this in mind, we warmly welcome all students to Pedro Menendez High School, and hope each student will do all he or she can to make the school outstanding. The Menendez Way is defined as living life with INTEGRITY, DIGNITY AND CLASS.

Important Information:
The school day will begin at 9:15 a.m. Students are expected to be in class and ready to learn at that time.
The day concludes at 3:45 p.m. (Early Release 2:45 p.m.) Students will NOT be checked out the last thirty minutes of the school day.
The student planner and the Code of Conduct are provided to students and parents to inform you of the policies and procedures for the current school year. These policies and procedures apply to all students regardless of age, while on campus and/or representing Menendez.
It shall be the responsibility of the parent/guardian and the student to be aware and adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in this planner and the SJCSD Code of Conduct. Students who do not follow the attendance and behavior expectations set-forth in this planner will be denied the privilege of participating in any/all after school activities.
All parents are encouraged to sign up for Parent Assistance. This web-based application allows parents the ability to view their child’s educational information. Parents using this program will be able to see students’ schedule of classes; homework assignments, test, and grades; current progress in each class; credits earned toward graduation; and detailed attendance information
The Principal, Assistant Principals, Deans, Teachers, and Staff are vested with the legal authority to enforce all school rules, maintain a safe and orderly classroom and school environment. Actions contrary to the directives of school personnel acting in their official capacity shall be considered defiant conduct and will be dealt with according to the Code of Student Conduct. Such conduct may result in suspension or other disciplinary actions. If a student has questions regarding the conduct of a member of the high school staff, these concerns are to be brought to the attention of an administrator.
To keep class interruptions to a minimum, parents are requested to ask for an early dismissal time, which falls during class changes. A parent or legal guardian may request an early dismissal by sending a note to the Attendance Office the morning of the checkout. All notes to leave early must be given to the Attendance Office before school. Notes not turned in before school, will not be honored. FAX, telephone calls or email will not be accepted for checkout. All students leaving school early must return to the Attendance Office to sign out before leaving campus. Failure to follow procedures will result in the absence being unexcused and disciplinary action will be taken.
Students checking out during lunch MUST report to the Attendance Office during their lunch period. Due to the size of our lunches and the numerous places students can eat lunch (inside and outside of the cafeteria); we are unable to locate students during their lunch period.
Each student who returns to school after an absence (check-in/out, partial or full day absences) must have a written excuse from a parent/guardian or a doctor’s note (original – not a copy), submitted to the Attendance Office within 48 hours of the student returning to school. Notes are accepted before school until 9:15am and during all lunches. The dated note, written and signed by a parent or legal guardian, must include the student’s legal first and last name, the cause of the absence, and the date(s) of the absence(s). This information is necessary before an excused absence can be granted. The student’s planner will be stamped with the appropriate stamp (EXCUSED, OVER 48 HRS, OVER 15 DAYS, or
UNEXCUSED). The stamped planner should then be shown to all teachers in order for make-up work to be accepted.
We DO NOT accept telephone calls, fax, and/or email in lieu of an ORIGINAL written note for all check-in, check-out, and/or absences. Any note which appears to be altered will not be accepted. All notes submitted after 48 hours of an absence will be recorded as unexcused.
After 15 days of absence, excused or unexcused during the school year, a student must have an original doctor’s verification for any subsequent absence due to illness. Doctor’s notes must be submitted within 48 hours of the student returning to school and contain exact dates.
Deans’ Office
The quest for excellence at Menendez extends to all areas of school life. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, considerate, and respectful manner. Good order and discipline are a must. Discipline procedures are implemented by staff members (Deans) and the school administration.
Deans are assigned by the first letter of the student’s last name.
Dwaine Fisher – A-M Melondia Corpus – N-Z In School Suspension - TBA
Scarlet Carter – Secretary
Cynthia A. Williams, Assistant Principal of Operations and Supervisor
Consequences – In-School Suspension - Saturday School - Suspension
Assigned discipline will not be rescheduled or reassigned. Parents with questions regarding discipline should contact the assigning Dean. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the necessary information regarding dates and times of scheduled discipline, adjust their schedule to attend assigned disciplines and to make transportation arrangements. Every attempt will be made to contact the parent/guardian by phone but ultimately it is the student’s responsibility to give the copy of the written notice to his/her parent/guardian.
In-School Suspension/Work Detail
In-School Suspension is a restricted classroom environment. This is the lowest level discipline. Teachers provide classroom assignments to students assigned to ISS. Students assigned to ISS from the Health Career Academy, will not be allowed to leave campus to attend hospital rotation. Discipline issues arising in ISS, failure to comply with ISS procedures, refusal to attend ISS, etc. will be considered defiance and the student will be suspended out-of-school for a minimum of three (3) days. Upon returning, the student must return to ISS and complete their assigned time. Students are limited to the number of times they may attend ISS during the school year. When a student completes their time in ISS, adjustments will be
made to the student’s attendance.
Saturday School
Saturday School is a work detail program (dress appropriately for the detail) scheduled once a month. This is the second level of discipline. Students are expected to be at school from 7:55 to 10:00 a.m. No tardiness is permitted. If a student fails to attend or is late for Saturday School, it will be considered defiance and he/she will be suspended.
Suspension
If a student is suspended from school, the student will be placed in ISS until the parent/guardian can pick them up or for the remainder of the day. The suspension will go into effect immediately and/or end of the school day. The student may not stay after school or attend any school sponsored event. In addition, the student may not be on any St. Johns County School property until the day the student is scheduled to return to school. Students will be considered trespassing if they are on campus during their suspension.
Below is the progression plan for all discipline issues unless otherwise indicated in the student planner. Continued refusal to abide by school policy will be considered an act of defiance and will result in suspension. The principal or his designee reserves the right to assign other consequences as deemed appropriate.
Consequences
1st Offense In-School Suspension
2nd Offense In-School Suspension – 2 days
3rd Offense Saturday School
4th or More Offense Out of School Suspension (considered defiance)
